You’re looking up how to earn commissions online – and you have heard that you can, but you don’t know HOW!…
Well, if you’re actually are interested in earning commissions on the net – then the business model you’re looking for is affiliate marketing
While there are lots of different ways you can make money online, affiliate marketing is a good one to learn as a beginner.
The great thing about it is, that it cuts out most of the mundane tasks of direct selling…
It cuts out customer service, shipping and product creation.
Instead, you get paid commission for promoting products and generating leads and sales — all the other stuff is dealt with separately to you.
That means that you can promote great products that have already been created and earn a commission from people who buy via your affiliate link.
What’s an affiliate link?!!? Some of you reading may not know.
Stick with me a moment and I will explain things in a bit more depth.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
I have actually already written a detailed post explaining what affiliate marketing is right here.
But, I will attempt to explain it simply and briefly now:
Affiliate marketing an ideal way to make money online for beginners, because there is a simplicity to it.
You don’t have to go out and buy thousands of dollars of inventory.
You don’t have to spend thousands on advertising, (you CAN, but you don’t have to).
You can start fairly cheaply as well, so, it’s a low-cost venture.
Let’s just imagine that you have a blog set up in a niche/interest that you love and you have written lots of content/posts on that blog.
Maybe you have a blog in the health niche and you wrote a review on a new diet program right now.
That diet program happens to have an affiliate program and they pay you 50% of the sign up cost, monthly recurring!
So, if the membership to the diet plan is $40, you get $20 each month …(for however long your sign up is a member).
If you have a blog in the health niche, you can sign up to this affiliate program and you will get a special affiliate link, connected to you only.
You use this link in your blog and link to the product, you then make money if someone goes through it and purchases a membership.
There are many thousands of affiliate programs online and every one will have their own set of terms and conditions, so be sure to check out the rules before you begin.
Also, how much an affiliate program will pay you, will again completely depend on what it is and their own set of rules.
You may be thinking… WAIT… I NEED A BLOG!?
Well yes. You should do have your own blog/website to get started.
Creating blog posts that contain affiliate links, could pay you many YEARS into the future – not just a one off.

How Can You Earn Commissions As A Beginner?
Many affiliate programs may require you to have a little experience before applying.
So, in those cases, having an empty blog, (or no blog at all) isn’t going to get you very far.
Although, there are exceptions.
For example; Amazon now has an influencer program whereby, you don’t need a website to get started – but you do need a good social media following to get approved.
So, if you don’t want to start a blog or website, but do have a large social media presence, you may want to check out the Amazon Influencer Program.
Amazon in general provides a good opportunity for those new to affiliate marketing, because there are a huge number of products you can promote and they’re a hugely well-known and trusted brand.
In any case, I would highly recommend that you do start a website, because this is going to give you much more scope for making money in future, as well as owning a piece of internet property that you could sell down the road.
Also, some programs will only expect a small amount of content on your blog before you can be accepted.
The amazon affiliate program is a good example of this; I applied and was accepted within the first month of starting my very first website, (and it wasn’t very good!).
There are other platforms, like Clickbank, where you can immediately start promoting products.
If you’re interested in what affiliate programs you can join as a beginner, this post can help.
How Long Does It Take To Make Commissions, With Affiliate Marketing?
How long it takes you, depends on a variety of factors.
One of the best ways to get traffic long term, is from SEO (search engine optimsation), (I will link you to some posts on that in a moment).
The problem with SEO is, it can take a lot of work to get ranked highly in the search engines, (so that people can actually find your posts).
Google takes a long time to trust a brand new website and you have to proove yourself, before Google rewards you with higher rankings.
Some people fast-track their success by writing a LOT of content, (such as 5-7 quality posts per week).
But even in that case, it can take many months to see results.
However, as far as getting your very first commissions, that can usually happen after a few months if you’re purely relying on SEO.
But many more people have started making commissions far sooner, by leveraging Pinterest.
If you want to know how you can use Pinterest to bring traffic to your blog, you could check out this free Pinterest Bootcamp.

Can Affiliate Marketing Make You Rich?
The simple answer is… yes.
But only a very small minority of people are ever going to reach a crazy income level.
A well known example; is Patt Flynn, who makes six figures a month from affiliate marketing.
Another well known example; is Michelle from making sense of cents, who also make six figures per month.
However, their are plenty of website owners making nothing from affiliate marketing, to small side incomes, to whatever they consider full-time and lot’s more.
It’s a full spectrum of different income levels….
But ultimately, success making any money at all relies on putting plenty of work in and most importantly, not giving up too quickly.
Many people will give up on it easily, once the novelty wears off.
It can be exciting at first, but you can get easily overwhelmed by information and it’s easy to lose momentum.
With so many “guru’s” and total scam artistis claiming that it’s really easy, (usually if you follow their system) then many people can get easily frustrated when it doesn’t seem to work for them.
Getting some legitimate training can really help make things clear, but the affiliate marketing space is hard to navigate, due to a lot of conflicting advice.
Lots of people want a quick fix and fast-track route – but the best way to learn affiliate marketing, is to do it from scratch step-by-step.
By learning exactly how to build your own online business, BY YOURSELF – you won’t be relying on anyone else and you’ll learn so many valuable skills that you will have for life.
- Email marketing,
- Content creation,
- Keyword ressearch,
- Content creation …. and so much more.
These are all great skills to learn and by doing it yourself, you’re building up skills that you will be able to use in the future.
Where Can You Get Started?
If you want to learn from scratch, I highly recommend you check out Wealthy Affiliate.
I’ve personally gone through all the training there and continue to participate on the platform – where they have a free membership and premium membership.
Even if you don’t become a premium member, it’s worth checking out the free training.
By the end of the training, you will definitely know whether it’s something you want to get into or not.
In addition to a tonne of training though, they also include websites, hosting, tools and a community…
So, it’s an all-in-one platform that understands the process of learning all this stuff is on-going.
There is always something new to learn and that’s one of the great things about it.
Some of the members create some brilliant training themselves and it’s so useful to have all that information at your fingertips.
If you’re not interested in being part of a community and are more into a one-off course, you may want to try out the blogging bootcamp here instead
There are various courses you can purchase over at Dare to Conquer for a one-off price as well).
Do You Have To Have A Blog/Website To Make Commissions Online?
No you don’t, but you should look at having one ultimately.
For example; I touched on earlier that you could join the affiliate influencer program and YouTubers online will usually have affiliate links in their video descriptions.
Big social media influencers will be able to use affiliate links too.
But many of those will also have a blog or website and realise that by doing so, they are making additional income streams, as well as building something long term that they own.
However, just spamming affiliate links everywhere is not going to lead to high conversions.
In fact, I will often have people commenting on my blog and recommending some product, with their affiliate link.
You know where that comment goes? That’s right… straight into SPAM!
One thing you should never, ever do – is comment on blogs and websites with your affiliate link.
That comment is just going to end up being deleted, or flagged as spam.

There is another way I have looked into affiliate marketing recently and that’s with Pinterest.
While I don’t recommend that you purely go on Pinterest to do affiliate marketing, it is a way for you to boost affiliate sales – (in addition to your blog).
Pinterest went through a time of not allowing affiliate links, but now they do.
That means you can link your Pin directly to an affiliate product or service, (although some programs won’t allow it, so you need to check the T&C’s).
I’m currently learning about this strategy right now, doing this course.
While it’s something I would use in combination with having a blog, there will be some doing it independently and especially if they have a big social media presence, (which may be essential to joining some affiliate programs without a blog).
Your Turn… Start Earning Commissions Online!
I made my first affiliate sales after a few months of starting online.
It wasn’t very much, but it felt amazing because, I then understood that it was possible and believed I could do more.
If you can make a couple of dollars online… why not hundreds, why not thousands? Right?
So, it’s getting those first sales that are really important and will help motivate you to carry on.
Weirdly, people generally don’t even stick with it long enough to see their very first sale!
