May seems to be quite up and down for me when it comes to KDP. Generally, they have been high months – but historically can be quite up and down throughout the month too. Several times in May, I’ve had a bulk order day of over $1000 in a day.
This May I didn’t get one of those big bulk order days, but there were still a couple of days which were over $500. The second half of the month was considerably lower than the first half for me.
As we head into the summer months, I’m reminded that June/July/August tend to be more quiet when it comes to sales. It also tends to be the time when I feel I should add some more books in time for Q4.
So, I published a couple of books this month – although the second one wasn’t actually live until the start of June, so I will include that in the books published in June.
I’m aiming to publish 5 books in June and that feels very achievable so, I hope I can exceed that as well. I am already running Ads to one of the new books but have had very few impressions so far, so have just upped the bid on that.
Any surprises in May?
The only thing that surprised me this May really, was that the highest book sold was a notebook and this is the same notebook that’s been selling well for months now.
As I’ve mentioned previously, I think this was due to the notebook being bundled with other items – like a bit of a gift package – with other related gifts in the niche.
This can be a great way to get additional sales, although there are no guarantees. While I have no idea if it works, doing a product targeting Ads towards related products in your niche could possibly encourage Amazon to group your book in with related products.
How Much Did I Make On KDP In May 2024?
In May I made $8379 in total, with a couple of days reaching over the $500 mark.
While it was Mothers Day in the USA this year, I didn’t particularly see related sales to that.
That’s a little different to last year, where one of the best sellers could possibly have been due to Mothers Day, (even though it wasn’t aimed at that niche specifically).
By comparison, you can see the previous May above. It looks very up and down and as you can see, the very first day of May was the highest of the month.
So, while last month was higher royalty-wise – typically May has been a bit of an unconventional month and not as predictable as some.
Not that you can rely on any month being *predictable,* with KDP.
Out of the blue books can take off and of course, your sales will fluctuate depending on a variety of different factors, many of which you won’t have control of. But that said, after you have been on KDP for several years, there are some months that are probably going to be higher than others.
For example; it’s always been the case that the summer months tend to be lower for me and that November/December and January tend to be some of the highest.
Advertising Spend:
If you want to see my advertising spend in detail, please watch the income report video above – where I go on to my Ads dashboard and show you how much I spent on each platform.
But in total, I spent around $1037 dollars. This is considerably more than the previous year and I did aim to reduce that towards the second half of the month.
Expenses-wise, it’s the same as last month – around $137. I need to do a check on that again – it might be a bit less than this but it’s around this amount.
Total Income For May 2024 For KDP:
$8379 total royalties.
– $1037 Ad spend.
– $137 Expenses.
Total: $7205
Overall I’m very happy with my May results and interested to see how the next few months go on KDP. I’m excited to create my next 5 books next month and seeing how they do. I intend to run ads to them all.
