Scribie Transcription Review: Legit? Or Transcription Scam?
Many people are beginning to look for work at home opportunities, and audio transcription is one of the hot jobs on the market.
One of the most popular companies to work for is Scribie. Is this “no experience necessary” opportunity too good to be true?
In this Scribie review we will be examining this company, it’s pros and cons, and whether it is really a company worth working for. So, let’s dig in!
What is Scribie About?
Scribie is an online transcription site that allows freelancers to make some extra cash.
It has a really flexible work from home schedule with no amount of minimum hours (or for that matter, a maximum amount of hours) that you have to put in. It’s also free to join.
There are a few requirements.
First, after you contact the company to tell them you are interested, they will have you submit a transcription test.
You are paid for your effort, and if you don’t pass they help you with markups on your test to show you where you can improve.
Furthermore, they give you up to ten tries!
Once you pass the test, you are hired and free to begin work whenever you wish. Don’t worry if you don’t have much experience, because that isn’t required. You will pick it up as you go along.
You must also be fluent in English, and type fairly quickly. You must also have a verified PayPal account along with high-speed internet. You will also need a good quality headset, and Adobe Flash Player.
They only use Safari, Firefox and Chrome internet browsers. Make sure you take note of all these conditions, before you apply.
In order to start work; all you have to do is log in to the site to view the audio files that are available to transcribe.
Best of all, you can preview them first so that; if a file is too garbled for you, you can throw it back in the pool.
All files are roughly six minutes long and consist of phone calls, speeches and interviews. After you pick your desired file, you will be paid depending on how long it is.
After that there is a three step process.
First you transcribe it. Second of all, you review it and finally; you submit it.
You have two hours to complete your transcription, or risk having your account cancelled.
Be warned, the pay isn’t going to help you make your bills (although it might put a bit of a dent in them).
This is meant for a little extra income and it only pays ten dollars per audio hour.
That’s one dollar for every six minute file. However, you can get your earnings through PayPal in 24 hours as long as you have earned at least a dollar.
On the other hand, you will get charged a 2% fee if the total you are withdrawing is under $30. So, it may be worth you waiting until you reach this point.
There are promotions for performance and doing well in their grading system. They have an incentive for transcribers to finish at least three hours of audio files in a month in order to earn an extra five dollars.
Every file you transcribe will be graded for performance, and you eventually raise yourself in rank. The first status you gain after promotion is reviewer.
Not only do you earn money for transcribing your own work, but you also earn for reviewing and approving other transcribers submissions. You can raise yourself up to self-reviewer after that.
This way you can submit your own transcriptions, review transcriptions, and review your transcription submissions yourself.
Eventually you may even be promoted to becoming a proofreader or working in quality check.
No matter the job or rank, you will be paid the same straight dollar per six minute audio file (unless you’re a proofreader or quality check specialist, where you will be paid a little better).
It is really important to keep your grades high, because once you have been demoted from a grade you can’t be re-promoted.
Eventually you will also be able to earn a 5% lifetime commission based off of any clients you refer to Scribie. There also seem to be an ample amount of files to choose from, and if you work quickly you can get a lot done in a day.
So, Is Scribie Legit – Or A Scam?
In my opinion, Scribie is a legit company. The pay is admittedly small, but it’s honest work that can help you get your foot in the door with other companies.
Your monthly income from it will also depend on how well and how quickly you can transcribe.
It is a difficult skill to learn (after all, it is hard to be able to both listen and type at the exact same pace as the audio files – eish!), but with practice you will become more proficient with it and I guess it will become almost second nature eventually.
You also don’t have to deal with customers or phone calls.
However, one of the downsides is the wait time to be tested and certified. Although, most people report that it takes days, weeks or months have been reported as well.
This job is great for those who want to work from home with a flexible schedule. You can work as much or as little as you want at your own convenience – which is a bonus.
There is no application fee to apply, and there is room for growth.
It seems to be a good side job for those who are looking for a little extra income. Best of all, you don’t need any experience to start earning this sort of side cash.
You can use Scribie as a legitimate reference on a resume too.
You can consider it a decent stepping stone in a career as an audio transcriptionist, if you feel so inclined.
It also gives you great beginning experience in your career. It is a good way to get your foot in the door and just get started.
I hope that this has been an informative review that will help you decide whether or not you would like to apply to Scribie.
As long as you are looking at the job realistically (and can type fairly well), I believe you will benefit from the opportunity.
